Ans. There was a test of participles that day and Franz was not prepared. He was more interested in going after the birds eggs and watching the soldiers drill and the weather too was very pleasant.

Ans. According to Franz the bulletin board was a source of bad news of lost battles and territories. Watcher the blacksmith stopped Franz. The news on the bulletin board was that they had lost two territories of Alsace and Lorraine and teaching of French had to be discontinued in schools.

the class unnoticed? What used to be the usual scene in the classroom?
Ans. Franz thought that the usual noise in
the classroom of the opening and closing of desks, the learning of lessons in
unison and the rapping of the teacher's ruler on the desk would help him get
inside without being noticed.
Q4. What things did Franz notice in the classroom that day? How was the
teachers attitude towards Franz
different that day? Who all did Franz recognize sitting on the back
benches?
Ans. The atmosphere of the class that day was very quiet and grave. The teacher spoke very politely to Franz and asked him to come inside.
He noticed that the teacher was wearing his
special dress which only wore on important days. A green coat frilled shirt and
black silk cap.
Franz recognised old Hauser, the former mayor, the former
postmaster and several others sitting on the back benches.
Q5. "What a thunderclap these words were to
me!" – Which were the words that shocked and surprised Franz? What was the
impact of the announcement? Why were the villagers seated on the back row?
Ans. The teacher announced that it was the last day of teaching French that day. They had lost the territories of Alsace and Lorraine and from the next day German teacher would come to teach German.
Franz was shocked at the news and regretted missing his classes and going after birds eggs and on the slide and watching the soldiers drill and playing. Now he developed a liking for his teacher and his books.
The villagers were seated on the back benches to give honour and respect to their language, their country and their teacher for his 40 years of dedicated service.

Ans. M Hamel said that French was the most
beautiful,clearest, easy and logical language and it was the key to their
prison. It was their identity and they must never lose it.

Ans. First of all he blamed the people of
France for their habit of postponing things to the next day. He blamed the
parents for sending the children to the fields in order to earn more money. He
also blamed himself for skipping classes when he went fishing and also so for
sending his students to water his plants and missing their classes thereby.
Q8. What does Franz think about the
cooing of pigeons?
Ans. He thought that the Germans could not
force the pigeons to go against their identity and coo in German. In a similar
way by imposing German on the French people the Germans would not be able to
snatch their identity and make them Germans.
Q9. How did the last lesson end?
Ans. Everybody was very emotional that the last lesson had come to an end. The
teacher was choked with emotion and could not say bye. He Just picked up the chalk
and wrote in large letters on the board ‘Viva
le France'.
